It didn’t take long for the Colorado Avalanche to re-sign centre Matt Duchene to a long-term deal.
Duchene’s new contract is a five-year deal worth $30m. The 22-year-old centre had an impressive season last year, scoring a total of 82 goals and accumulating 111 assists in just 266 games.
This decision must have been quite simple for Duchene. Not just because of the nice pay cheque, but because this also presents an incredible opportunity for him. With Nathan Mackinnon set to join the team this season, this team will certainly not be in the bottom of the standings next season.
With Duchene and Mackinnon on the same line, the potential for success has just increased substantially for this team. Mackinnon brings speed, intensity and another accurate shot. If Duchene picks up where he left on last season, these two players could be potential top scorers in the NHL next season.
However, there are still some changes required for this team. I believe they need to invest in another veteran forward. This roster is fairly young, and would certainly benefit from having a few veterans in the dressing room.
Perhaps this may be an excellent team for long time veteran Jagr to consider signing for. Regardless, the Colorado Avalanche has plenty of depth and talent to work with next season. And if goaltender Seymon Varlamov can bounce back from a disappointing season, this team could quickly become one of the best in the west.
Only one question remains for me. Who will score first: Mackinnon or Duchene?
