Shocking open goal miss in Copa Libertadores final

The Copa Libertadores is the biggest competition in South American club football and so the final is a place to bring out your best stuff and certainly not your worst.

Sadly for Fredy Bareiro, his worst was exactly what he brought in the first leg of the final against Atletico Mineiro in 2013’s edition of the competition.

Olimpia were hosting their Brazilian opponents in Asunción, Paraguay when he possibly made the most embarrassing mistake of his career.

The 31-year-old was nicely positioned as Olimpia surged into the Galo box and an initial shot had been cleared just in front of the line, but it looked a certain goal as Bareiro was waiting with the goal gaping.

Yep, you guessed it, the forward couldn’t get his feet coordinated and fluffed a terrible effort wide of the open goal from right on the six yard line.

It came at quite quickly but there is no excuse for missing the target there – Bareiro’s expression as he sinks to the turf afterwards says it all.

Luckily for him it didn’t ultimately cost his side as they eventually ran out 2-0 winners againt Ronaldinho’s side, taking a healthy lead into the second leg in Brazil.
