Barcelona president Sandro Rosell confirmed that 44-year-old Tito Vilanova has decided to step down as Barcelona’s manager, following a continued battle with cancer.
Having confirmed his departure, attention will quickly turn to who will succeed Vilanova at Barcelona.
We look at the possible options for the Catalan side in their bid to replace the record-breaking manager.
Andre Villas-Boas | Tottenham
The former Porto and Chelsea manager has been installed as the early favourite to succeed Vilanova.
The Portuguese led Tottenham to fifth place in last season’s Premier League. He has reiterated his desire to stay with the north London club, however a move to Barcelona might prove too tempting to resist.
Juan Francesc Ferrer, 'Rubi' | Barcelona
The relatively unknown Spanish coach managed Girona in La Segunda last season, leading them to the playoff final.
He joined Barcelona as Vilanova's assistant earlier in the summer. He is second favourite for the role, according to SkyBet.
Michael Laudrup | Swansea
The former Barcelona midfielder led Swansea to their first major trophy last season with some silky passing football, similar to Barcelona.
Although just like Villas-Boas, Laudrup has ruled out a move from Swansea, but the chance to coach his former team might prove too good to turn down.
Arsene Wenger | Arsenal
Arsene Wenger is highly-rated in Spain, with clubs appreciating his managerial technique of nurturing youth players.
The hugely successful manager has not hidden his intention to renew his contract with Arsenal.
The club has shown faith in him despite a barren trophy-less run, so Wenger might decide to repay the faith shown in him and stay with the Gunners.
Jupp Heynckes | Unattached
The treble winner left Bayern Munich following the appointment of former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.
He masterminded Bayern’s demolition of Barcelona in last season’s Champions League.
Heynckes might be tempted to take the helm at Barcelona and aim to repeat his success from last season.
