At the peak of his career, Carles Puyol was one of the best defenders in the world.
He was well known for his no-nonsense defending and supreme strength and few trophies have evaded him.
Now, as Puyol is nearing the closing stages of his career, he is not playing very often due to reoccurring injuries but still has the energy within him to continue playing for Barcelona.
Although he may not find himself in the team very often he can still utilise his leadership qualities and hunger for the game - so should he become Barcelona's player-manager?
With the sad news that Barcelona's manager Tito Vilanova is stepping down from his post due to illness, there is an open door at the Spanish giants and Puyol would do a great job as a player-manager.
With years of experience in the game and working under fine managers like Rajkaard and Guardiola, he will perform to Barcelona's standards in the player-manager position. Combining Puyol's superb qualities on-and-off the pitch will allow Barcelona to move forward with a potential long-term manager, while the Spaniard will still be able to get involved in the action.
These qualities not only make him a good player on the pitch but will allow him to portray them to the rest of the team in a managerial role.
Puyol has captained one of the best teams in world football for many years, and for good reason too.
Allowing him to express these leadership and driving qualities while still playing would be a great decision.
