Andre Villas-Boas is hopeful that the injury picked up by defender Jan Vertonghen won't keep him out of action for too long.

The Belgian was taken off in Spurs' 3-1 pre-season defeat against Sunderland in the Barclays Asia Cup this morning.

Vertonghen is believed to have picked up an ankle sprain and it was initially feared he could miss the start of the new season.

However Villas-Boas says he is confident that the injury is not too serious.

“It seems like he twisted his ankle, it could be sprained ankle ligaments,” Villas-Boas told Sky Sports News.

“Hopefully there is not too much damage as he has a good range of movement still, but it is swollen a bit.

“We hope it is nothing very serious, the MRI scan is positive and he’ll be back for the start of the season.”

Tottenham's defeat against Sunderland was dogged by torrential weather which threatened to bring the game to an abrupt halt.

“I was concerned [about the conditions] but what can you do? It isn’t great, the pitch is what it is," Villas-Boas continued.

“There are often problems here, but you can’t change the conditions. They are extremely poor.”
