WrestleMania is supposed to be the biggest event on the wrestling calendar; and the majority of the time it has not failed to impress.
However the most recent WrestleMania was not the most impressive and SummerSlam has the chance of topping it.
We have already witnessed Extreme Rules, Payback and Money in the Bank, and many fans would tell you that surprisingly, they have all managed to top WrestleMania 29; and now it's the turn of SummerSlam; one of the most important events on the wrestling calendar.
From Edge spearing Jeff Hardy off the ladder at WrestleMania 17 to Hulk Hogan slamming Andre the Giant.
Other special moments such as Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit standing victorious with the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships at WrestleMania 20 and the moment Shawn Michaels ended the illustrious in-ring career of Ric Flair; the WWE has never failed to prove why WrestleMania is a must watch every single year.
But the latest instalment with 29; was far from memorable.
The majority of outcomes were predictable whilst the standard of some matches were just terrible.
To back it up matches from Extreme Rules, Payback; which is probably the event to beat this year, and Money in the Bank, have all topped WrestleMania 29 in terms of excitement and outcomes; and SummerSlam is shaping up to be on course to topping ‘Mania as well.
The funny thing is, it is just getting started; we have only heard two matches being announced; John Cena defending his WWE Championship against Daniel Bryan, which many people have favoured over the second match between The Rock and John Cena; whilst a match between CM Punk and Brock Lesnar has also been confirmed; The Best vs. The Beast.
These two matches alone make better use of all four men that their respective matches at WrestleMania; as well as last year’s SummerSlam.
They are obviously a lot less easier to predict as well, which does add some intrigue to the event. I think it was fair to say John Cena would beat The Rock and The Undertaker would defeat CM Punk.
But can John Cena end Daniel Bryan’s momentum? Or can CM Punk actually beat Brock Lesnar? Again, they are a whole lot tougher to call.
The match between Bryan and Cena doesn’t just prove that the match itself will be great; as all of Bryan’s matches are of a top level; but you can already imagine the crowd’s reaction if Bryan can defeat Cena for the WWE Championship; the Staple’s Center will erupt.
However, to make that match even more interesting; we could potentially see Randy Orton make his long-awaited heel turn, if he opts to cash-in his briefcase on Daniel Bryan; there are countless possibilities.
But will Orton even turn up at the end of the match? Will the WWE just do a curve-ball and have John Cena win? Or will Orton cash-in on Cena?
For the first time in a very long time, I genuinely have no idea which direction the WWE could go with regarding the outcome; which continues to interest me even further. Already; both men are being used better than they were at WrestleMania.
CM Punk and Brock Lesnar will also be interesting, with Punk’s resiliency on Raw it makes the match seem more like Punk could stand a chance against Lesnar. Punk was never going to end The Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania; and there was no way Triple H would ‘quit’ if Lesnar won; it was predictable, but just like the Bryan-Cena match; this one could go either way.
This is actually a big test for Lesnar; although he has done some great things during his time in the WWE; he is facing someone other than Triple H or John Cena ever since Extreme Rules in 2012; but not to worry as CM Punk’s unique style will make this match different and he will make Lesnar look great.
Yes, Triple H and John Cena have defeated Brock Lesnar, but CM Punk will be the one who has pushed Lesnar to his absolute limit, Lesnar needs someone who can help him bring out the best; Punk is the perfect man for the job.
The outcome, CM Punk can win; so can Brock Lesnar, would a loss tarnish the career of either man? No.
Does either man truly have anything to lose? Not really, pride is at stake but that is always at stake every time a superstars steps into the ring; just like the previous match; once again I am genuinely stuck as to who to pick, I can see Brock winning, I can see Punk winning; but what will the creative decide is the best direction to go in?
That is just the start, potential matches which can trump certain WrestleMania 29 matches include a bout between Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow; the true WWE fans will know that although they are at a mid-level yet; this match has the potential to steal the show.
So much charisma and athleticism is on offer, including the chemistry that the two former partners have on offer, and the almighty briefcase on the line.
Sandow could win, he could cash in on the same night, Rhodes could do the same thing; it is the questions which arise; where you genuinely feel this match could go either way, and neither result would be disappointing.
The briefcase may or may not be on the line, you would have to guess that it would be; to give their match some depth and meaning and raise the level of drama.
Give me a Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow match at SummerSlam over the Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 29 any day.
It still doesn’t end there, this back and forth feud between The SHIELD and The Uso’s could be set to continue, as we could see a six-man-tag match between the pair with Mark Henry.
Or we could see Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins defend their Tag Team Championships against The Usos; whilst Dean Ambrose defends his United States Championship against Mark Henry; again, something which has a number of possibilities and each one could result in a brilliant outcome.
You cannot rule out the fact that The SHIELD could lose all their championships in one night, it may not be the best of decisions but if anyone can do that as of right now, The Usos and Mark Henry are the perfect and most viable option.
Could this lead to a break-up between one of the most exciting teams in recent years?
Who knows, but the reason this match is better than The SHIELD’s outing at WrestleMania against Randy Orton, Sheamus and The Big Show; is became with championships there is something solid on the line, more than just asserting dominance.
Already this is shaping up to provide better matches than WrestleMania, the best match of WrestleMania 29 was hands-down The Undertaker defeating CM Punk; whereas SummerSlam has a number of matches which could outshine that single match.
We could also see the anticipated debut of Bray Wyatt as he could take on Kane, Alberto needs a World Heavyweight Championship contender; AJ Lee can continue her excellent feud with Kaitlyn; Curtis Axel needs a challenger to his Intercontinental Championship; and Rob Van Dam has been touted as a potential rival.
Not just that, The Big Show, should he return, could rival Ryback; and another match which has the ability to steal the show; Dolph Ziggler vs. Big E Langston.
A perfect way to get Ziggler over as a face whilst Langston has the opportunity to make his mark on the main roster even more than he already has.
Again; I would much prefer to see these two go one-on-one against each other rather than their WrestleMania match where they took on Team Hell No; this is another huge moment in Ziggler’s career.
If I was to choose between this potential match card and the WrestleMania 29 match card; I would definitely choose SummerSlam over ‘Mania; this year it was a big letdown, not just for me but for many fans.
What do you think? Was WrestleMania 29 overhyped? Does SummerSlam have what it takes to outshine WrestleMania 29? Have your say below.
