Rio Ferdinand has declared that he will indeed be going to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup.
The Manchester United defender has revealed his plans to go out to South America as a fan and he will cheer on a lot of his former England team mates - should they qualify that is.
After representing his country 81 times, Ferdinand announced his retirement from the international game back in May, after several tough years around the England set-up.
But in an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Ferdinand claimed that his experience as a player at big tournaments has influenced his decision to fly out with thousands of other supporters next June.
"I think I will be going over as a fan to be honest. When we went to World Cups and the coach would drive us to the stadium I used to see the fan festivals going on and thought it looked like good fun so I would love to go out to Brazil and cheer the team on. I am a football fan," he explained to the newspaper.
Nevertheless, does the centre-back regret ruling himself out of contention to be pulling on a real - rather than replica - England shirt in 2014?
Apparently not, as it has prolonged his club career, and Ferdinand realistically added: "It is never easy having to decide to give up something you love and I did love playing for my country. I was so proud. I thought about playing for England ever since I was a young kid.
"I thought about pulling on that white shirt even before I thought about playing for any club. It was my boyhood ambition."
So it looks like the former West Ham and Leeds central defender is going to have to experience any future England success vicariously. And next summer you can expect him to be just as passionate as the thousands of other English fans who also make the pilgrimage to Brazil.
