Barcelona are reported to be planning an approach for Chelsea defender David Luiz having identified the Brazil international as their top target for the summer transfer window.

Luiz has been linked with a transfer to the Camp Nou for a number of months and, according to, Barcelona are now ready to formalise their interest in the versatile 26-year-old.

Barcelona are reported to be planning a bid of around £25 million to test Chelsea's resolve to keep the player, whose future at Stamford Bridge has appeared in doubt in recent weeks.

It was claimed that Chelsea included Luiz in their offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, although the Blues later denied the bid was a part-exchange offer.

Luiz has been on the radar of Barcelona for some time, with the Catalan giants looking to recruit reinforcements at centre-back following the departure of Eric Abidal and with Carles Puyol nearing the end of his career.

The former Benfica defender, however, insisted last week that he had no intention of leaving Chelsea and does not welcome any speculation about his future with the west London club.

"I do not like the rumours about me and the possible departure," he told O Globo.

"I have a contract with Chelsea until June 2017 and do not want to talk to other clubs."

Luiz has made 109 appearances for Chelsea since moving to London from Lisbon in the January transfer window of 2011.
