Liverpool are being linked with a shock loan move for Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.

The Daily Mirror claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on the 22-year-old as cover for Jose Enrique, who spent much of last season playing in a more advanced position at Anfield.

Melgarejo can also play further forward, and will be offered a permanent deal after an initial one-year loan at Liverpool, the report claims.

The Reds have set their sights on the Paraguayan full-back after giving up on Aly Cissokho, with the Valencia star’s wage demands proving to be a major stumbling block in the club’s efforts to bring the player to Merseyside.

Melgarejo featured regularlly at the Estadio da Luz last season, and featured heavily in the club’s run to the Europa League final.

However, his time in Portugal could be up, and with the youngster keen on a move to a bigger league, Liverpool will hope to lure the former Independiente starlet to the Premier League.
