Liverpool target Schalke star

Liverpool are set to revive their interest in Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to reports.

The Daily Express claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will look to raid the Bundesliga outfit for the centre back, and are preparing a £13million offer for the player.

Chelsea have previously been linked with a move for the Greek international, the paper claims, but the Stamford Bridge outfit baulked at the £19million price tag.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is in far less need for a centre back, with John Terry, David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill all vying for places in west London.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking to replace Jamie Carragher following the Kop legend’s decision to retire at the end of the season.

And, with Martin Skrtel’s future on Merseyside far from certain, the paper claims Rodgers has set his sights on defender targets – with Papadopoulos one of them.

Reports overseas claimed Rodgers had previously tracked the player, but had concerns over his poor injury record.

But, despite the player appearing just ten times in the German top flight last season, he may be ready to roll the dice on the young talent.

The paper claims the asking price has now been lowered to £13million, and Liverpool are ready to come to the negotiating table ahead of the new season.
