Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry is attracting interest from Italian side Napoli, according to reports in Italy.

New Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is a keen admirer of Barry and even tried to sign the England international when he left Aston Villa back in 2009.

Benitez was beaten to his signature by Manchester City during his first pursuit of the midfielder - but the rejection has failed to deter Benitez.

Barry admitted earlier this week that he was yet to discuss a new contract with the club - despite his current deal ending at the end of the 2013/14 season.

The former Aston Villa man may have to leave the Etihad Stadium if he wants any chance of being named in Roy Hodgson's 2014 World Cup squad.

New Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini may be willing to let Barry go as he has a host of midfielders at his disposal - with the likes of Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia and new signing Fernandinho already at the club.
