Blackburn Rovers have pulled out of a deal with Aston Villa’s Barry Bannan after negotiations broke down, according to Sky Sports.
Rovers manager Gary Bowyer was confident of bringing the 23-year-old to Ewood Park after agreeing a deal for the midfielder.
However, the Scot’s move to Lancashire failed to materialize after Blackburn failed to agree terms with the player’s representatives.
Bowyer, 42, had hoped to bolster his squad ahead of the opening game of the season.
“We are hopefully of bringing one or maybe two before the Derby Game,” said Bowyer.
Bannan made 31 appearances for Villa last season, including 24 in the Premier League.
The midfielder may find appearances hard to come-by next season with the arrival of Aleksandar Tonev from Lech Poznan, alongside competition from team-mates Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph.
The Scottish international has been at the club since he was 14, after rejecting Celtic’s offer to join their academy in favour of having a trial with the club.
