Liverpool star nears Serie A switch

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is nearing a loan switch to Napoli, according to Tuttosport.

The 28-year-old, who will command a salary worth £2.6 million per season at Napoli, will initially join the Serie A runners-up on loan, but any deal is likely to include a clause that turns the temporary switch into a permanent one, should all parties be happy with the deal.

If the move goes ahead as anticipated, Skrtel will link up with former Liverpool star and fellow loanee, Pepe Reina, who signed for the Italian giants last week.

Despite insisting he was happy to stay at Anfield and fight for a first-team spot, Skrtel's departure is another part of Brendan Rodgers' summer squad overhaul, having signed the likes of Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, and Simon Mignolet.

Although the arrival of Kolo Toure strengthens Liverpool's defensive options, Rodgers is likely to dip into the transfer market once again in search of a replacement for Skrtel.

Meanwhile, Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo is expected to be confirmed as the next arrival, signing a one-year loan to provide cover for Jose Enrique at left-back.
