Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest, according to the player's agent.
Chiriches, who has been compared to Chelsea's Brazilian star David Luiz, was also a target of Italian giants AC Milan and Roma.
However, after Steven Caulker departed White Hart Lane for Cardiff City, Andre Villas-Boas looks set to bring in Chiriches as an immediate replacement.
Initially the deal to take the 23-year-old to north London appeared off after Steaua owner Gigi Becali believed Spurs were trying to rush the deal.
It's reported the owner, who is currently serving time in jail for abuse of the country's land exchange system, told Steaua's general manager: "Who are Tottenham? Why can’t they wait? Don’t do the transfer! I’m not selling! I am Gigi Becali!"
But, now, Chiriches agent believes a fee has been agreed between the clubs and his player will soon sign for Tottenham.
Chiriches agent said: "[Roma] have not raised their offer of £5.7m. Tottenham, however, are now up to £7m and have taken the player.
"It is at 99 per cent certain – it only lacks the signature of the boy, who will arrive soon."
Spurs will now hope there are no more twists in this transfer saga and the player will sign for the club in the near future.
