Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen looks set to miss the start of the new season as it has been revealed he will be out of action for another six weeks.

The centre-back, who lost his place in the Gunners' starting XI last season, injured his lower back before the side's tour of the Far East.

With just over two weeks until the north London side begin their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa, at the Emirates, the Belgian international will have to watch from the stands.

However, there was some good news for the Gunners, as Arsene Wenegr confirmed left-back Nacho Monreal will return to training on Monday.

The Arsenal boss told a press conference: "Vermaelen is out for six more weeks, Monreal will start training on Monday."

Monreal has also been suffering with a back problem and will be hoping regain his full fitness ahead of the new season.

The Spanish star will be looking to challenge Kieran Gibbs for a place in the side for the 2013/14 campaign.
