A second-half penalty by Felipe Melo earned Galatasaray a 1-0 win over Porto, who themselves missed two spot kicks, in the opening match of the 2013 Emirates Cup.

The Turkish champions ran out 1-0 winners, but the Portuguese title holders were left kicking themselves after missing two penalties either side of half-time.

Jackson Martinez saw his first-half spot-kick saved by Fernando Muslera, while Lucho Gonzalez spurned the chance to earn a point for Porto, firing wide from 12 yards in the closing stages of the match.

To the delight of the Arsenal supporters inside the Emirates Stadium, it was Emmanuel Eboue who won the penalty which led to Melo’s winner.

The former Gunner was brought down inside the penalty area, allowing Melo to cooly stroke the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Galatasaray and Porto were fairly evenly matched, although in the form of Didier Drogba, the Turkish giants have a striker who is still more than capable of producing a flash of inspiration.

The Ivory Coast international, who used to terrorise Arsenal on a regular basis during his Chelsea days, clearly enjoyed his return to the Emirates Stadium - and went close to scoring in both halves.

In the first, he span his marker brilliantly before stinging the palms of Fabiano with a typically powerful strike, while a trademark free-kick in the second half was again saved by the Porto goalkeeper.

While Drogba was reasonably impressive, the crowd might have expected more from Porto’s highly-rated striker Martinez, who has been linked with a big-money move away from the Portuguese champions this summer.

The Colombia international missed from the spot after Silvestre Varela was hauled down inside the box midway through the first half, while his team-mate Lucho did no better with his effort in the second half.

Another star on show was Wesley Sneijder who, like Martinez, also failed to really make his presence felt as it was expected he would.

Instead, it was Arsenal’s cult hero Eboue who had the last laugh. The full-back was taken down inside the box by Eliaquim Mangala, allowing Melo to earn Galatasaray victory.
