AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli, one of the so-called bad boys of European football, has appeared in one of the most surprising online videos of the year.

The former Manchester City star is filmed playing the Italian national anthem - on the piano.

Balotelli, who regularly made newspaper headlines for a series of bizarre and controversial incidents during his three-year spell in England, showed a room of surprised onlookers - including Italy legend Andrea Pirlo, who stood closest to the piano - a gentler side to his character.

However, sadly, there is an explanation. The short video was filmed for an advert, according to the Daily Mail.

Still, it was heart-warming to think of Balotelli as a secret musician, if only for a few fleeting moments.

The 22-year-old, who joined Milan from Manchester City in January, has enjoyed a burst in popularity in his home country since steering Italy to the Euro 2012 final.

And this video is likely to further endear him to the Italian public - even if it isn't Mario himself playing the tune.
