A short trip from the city into the countryside offers a stark reminder of the intense heat of the summer so far, with once green fields transformed into a lifeless shade of brown following weeks of severe scorching.

This summer has been a particular tricky one for ground-staff across Europe, as they have worked tirelessly to prepare their respective playing surfaces in time for the new football season.

In Belgium, however, it would appear the head groundsman of OH Leuven was not entirely satisfied with his work during the off-season, and seemed to decide that the pitch was in need of a decent dousing - even during their second home match of the campaign.

During the second period of the encounter with Genk play was suspended after two sprinklers emerged from the turf to scatter water over the outfield, giving players and officials a good soaking in the process.

The momentary break in play, however, did not prevent OH Leuven from falling to defeat, as Genk triumphed with a comfortable 4-1 victory.
