Arsenal's pursuit of Luis Suarez has seen Arsene Wenger abandon his usually frugal approach in the transfer market with the Gunners intent on breaking their own transfer record to sign the Liverpool star.

The highest fee ever paid by the Emirates Stadium club is the measly £15 million to secure the signature of Andrey Arshavin in 2009, but Arsenal are prepared to blow that out of the water to sign Suarez.

Arsenal have already offered almost three times that amount in the hope of landing the Uruguay international, although Liverpool have not yet entertained any bids from the north Londoners.

The Gunners, however, have yet to admit defeat and reports on Thursday claim Wenger is not only ready to break his own transfer record, but set a new benchmark in British transfer history.

Arsenal, it is claimed, are willing to pay £51 million to finally recruit Suarez from Liverpool, which would surpass the £50 million outlay from Chelsea to capture Fernando Torres in 2011.
