Referee fouls South American star

Considering the amount of stick referees receive from players, it's a surprise that incidents like this aren't more common.

Of course, it was entirely accidental, but when a referee inadvertently "fouls" a player it is - without exception - pretty funny.

Not for the player on the receiving end, mind. And in this case it was the 2010 South American Footballer of the Year and former Portsmouth loanee Andres D’Alessandro, who has plied his trade with Brazilian club International since 2008.

D'Alessandro, the former Argentina international, dropped deep to receive the ball, only to be clattered to the referee, who was running in the opposite direction.

Standing at a diminutive 5ft 8in, D'Alessandro stood no chance against a referee of significant stature.

After a few seconds flat out on the deck, a dazed D'Alessandro staggered to his feet before continuing with the rest of the match.
