Manchester City are ready to take on Liverpool in the race to sign Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Accrdoing to the Mirror, new Etihad Stadium boss Manuel Pellegrini is concerned about the centre of his defence following an ankle injury suffered by Matija Nastasic, which will see him miss the first month of the new season.

With just captain Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott left as fit senior centre-backs, the report claims Pellegrini wants another body in there and Papadopoulos could be his next target.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been credited with an interest in the promising Greece international this summer, though he will be worried by any involvement of Manchester City.

The Anfield club have already acquired Kolo Toure on a free transfer after he was released by the Citizens, but any plans for Papadopoulos will be hit by Manchester City’s spending power.

Rodgers already has sufficient transfer troubles with Luis Suarez attempting to engineer a move away from Liverpool.

The report claims Pellegrini’s top defensive target was Real Madrid star Pepe, but the Santiago Bernabeu club are not interested in selling.
