Liverpool close on La Liga defender

Liverpool are poised to win the race for Manchester United defender target Guilherme Siqueira.

Metro claims the Reds have agreed a £5million deal for the Brazilian left-back, who would provide competition in a relatively weak position at Anfield.

Whilst Stewart Downing was not a full-back, he played in the position at times last season, as Brendan Rodgers was exposed on the left side of his defence. His exit created a space that needs to be filled.

And, with a fee now reportedly agreed, Liverpool must now work to agree personal terms with the Granada star ahead of the start of the campaign.

The Merseyside giants begin their challenge for a place in Europe against Stoke on Saturday, with the Potters making the trip to face Rodgers’ side away.

Jose Enrique is likely to be the starting left-back, but Siqueira will certainly fancy his chances of becoming first choice if the move to Liverpool is completed.

His arrival at the Reds will be a blow to Manchester United however, who had also been linked with a move for the player.

Indeed, Metro claims Red Devils boss David Moyes was interested in bringing the player to Old Trafford, providing competition for Patrice Evra and Fabio Da Silva.

However, Manchester United will now have to look elsewhere, if the reports turn out to be true and Liverpool have secured the deal.
