Arsenal are ready to make a £6 million bid for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the Metro.

The Belgian international, who has also been linked with Tottenham and Everton this summer, has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at the Dutch outfit.

Spartak Moscow are also in the running for the 24-year-old, but the defender would reportedly rather a move to the Premier League.

He could join fellow Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates, if he joins the club this summer.

Wenger is hoping to sure up his defence after he saw his side beaten 3-1 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.

After the Gunners’ defeat, fans were angry at the club’s lack of spending this summer, as they canted ‘spend, spend, spend’.

Arsenal have the opportunity to make up for their recent defeat as they travel to Turkey tonight to take on Fenerbachce in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying round.
