FIFA 14 will be free to play on mobile devices, EA Sports announced during their press conference at Gamescom in Cologne.

The announcement was not a major surprise, given the success of some of Electronic Arts' other title since going F2P.

However, any announcement that includes the word 'free' and 'FIFA' is sure to get a gamer's pulses racing, and the initial shots showcased in Germany suggest that the latest edition will be a step forward from FIFA 13.

Indeed, executive producer David Rutter showed some of the impressive new features, including the swipe-to-shoot and tap-to-pass movements that could make the game a must have for any football fan on the move.

Available on iOS and Android, the new game will also offer free downloadable commentary packs in various European languages, but the key question remains as to how EA hope to monetise the game.
