Arsenal have entered the race to sign Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, reports the London Metro.

The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Amsterdam Arena this summer, with Atletico Madrid recently having a bid turned down for his signature.

A switch to the Premier League has been touted for the Belgium international, having previously caught the eye of Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Daily Star.

Dutch sources now suggest that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been in touch with the Eredivisie club over the weekend, about the possibility of bringing Alderweireld to the Emirates Stadium before the close of the transfer window next week.

The Frenchman's strong relationship with current Ajax director of football Marc Overmars could bode well for Arsenal in their pursuit of the player, though they will be required to pay more than £6.5million for the versatile stopper's services.

"We have rejected the offer from Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld," confirmed the Arsenal legend. "We were contacted this weekend but it was not considered sufficient for a player of the national team of Belgium."

Asked specifically about interest from his former club, Overmars added: "They would need to pay the asking price, if we were to let one of our players go."
