Liverpool launch Juan Mata loan bid - reports

Chelsea have rejected a shock loan bid from Liverpool for Juan Mata, according to talkSPORT.

Mata - who was Chelsea's Player of the Year last season - has been linked with a surprise move away from Stamford Bridge ever since Jose Mourinho returned to the Blues.

The 25-year-old was linked with a summer move to Manchester United as part of a swap deal with striker Wayne Rooney in July, however Mourinho has since denied those claims.

Mourinho already has a number of attacking midfielders in the same mould as Mata at his disposal - and the Chelsea boss is set to sign Anzhi Makhacchkala playmaker Willian before the transfer closes next Monday.

Willian's arrival could push Mata - who was an unused substitute for Chelsea's clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday - further down the Blues' pecking order.

It had earlier been suggested that Tottenham had enquired about Mata's availability, however talkSPORT believe the north London side are not chasing the Spaniard's signature.

Mourinho said in the aftermath of the game at Old Trafford that Mata would be staying at Chelsea - but Mata may be tempted by a move away from the club if his future is not clarified before September 2.
