Another promising young German, Julian Draxler’s value has been set at a whopping £60million by his club Schalke; but Arsenal haven’t been deterred by this and could spend for the first time this summer, reports Goal.com.
Just one in a long line of young German talents, Draxler had an impressive season last year for Schalke. He has attracted attention from all over Europe, and while Arsenal are unwilling to pay £60million, Arsene Wenger looks happy to pay £40million for the attacking midfielder.
This could be the first and only time Arsenal spend money in the transfer window, so they will want to make it count, but with so many players having passed Arsenal by, I now don’t expect them to complete the deal.
Luis Gustavo, Gonzalo Higuian and Karim Benzema, these are all players that looked as though they would join Arsenal, but have instead opted for another club. Why? Is Wenger unwilling to pay the wages that must be paid? Or has Arsenal’s lack of ambition in the last five years put off players? Whatever it is, things have to change.
I believe that if Arsenal do make the signing of Draxler, they will be over-paying by some stretch, with Isco, Mario Gotze and Bernard all similar players, at similar ages moving to clubs for far less money.
Is this desperation buying from Arsenal? Don’t get me wrong, Draxler could be one of the best, but I don’t believe he is better than Bernard, Gotze or Isco.
To conclude, despite Wenger being under a huge amount of pressure from the fans, he must not buy out of desperation.
