With a week left in the season, the Huddersfield Giants have won the League Leader's Shield in the Super League.
The Giants won the shield in convincing fashion after a 40-0 win over financially struggling Wakefield Wildcats. The win represents the first time the Giants have been atop the table in 81 years, and is their first bit of silverware since 1962.
The Giants finished the game with an almost perfect tackle completion percentage and their first shutout of the season. The win also takes their unbeaten record to eight games, their most since 2007.
Tries came in the game from Chan (6,27) Murphy (42) McGilvary (46, 71) and Lunt (80). Brough added goals to five of the six scores (6,27,46,71,80).
Indeed, captain Danny Brough was in great form in-front of the largest crowd at the John Smith’s Stadium this season. He has been at the forefront of the Giants campaign and is now a shoe-in for the Super League man of steel award.
The Wildcats face a difficult off-season having already sold star player Tim Smith to try and ease the financial strain on the club. They have this week announced a new club chairman to help with the finances.
The Giants now head into the play-offs and will face whoever finishes in 4th position. That will be decided next week when the Leeds Rhinos face the Wigan Warriors to decide who takes third place in the table and a home leg in the playoffs, and who takes the more difficult rout of playing the newly crowned League Leaders
