Bale's salary a subject of much debate

Is Gareth Bale worth a mind numbing £300,000 a week? That is the question on many people's lips after the transfer saga of the summer came to an end and Gareth Bale was purchased for £86million.

Speaking ahead of last weekend's north London derby Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had told reporters Real Madrid were being 'very generous' in their pursuit of Gareth Bale.

The Arsenal boss also had a pop at the inflated prices being paid for players in general, which in his opinion are not worth the price tag they carry.

Wenger claimed very few players justify a £50million tag, stating: “For me, there are very, very, very, very few players economically justifying paying over £50million.” The Gunners' manager hinted that Bale didn't fall into this £50million plus category.

"It's quite amazing in the year when Financial Fair Play comes in, world football goes completely crazy."

The Frenchman made no secret of that fact that he was unconvinced over the value that Tottenham had placed on Bale's head.

"You wonder what kind of impact and effect it has on the football world. It looks like it has made everybody worse than before. It makes a joke of it."

Such a lucrative transfer has also sparked many reactions from the football world in general, with many figures having hit out at this record breaking transfer.

Popular football pundit Matt le Tissier also believes that the Spanish giants are wrong to pay such excessive fees just for one player.

Le Tissier told The Daily Express; “Gareth Bale has become the world’s most expensive player at Real Madrid and good luck to him because he is a fabulous player.

“The £300,000 per week wages it’s reported the Spanish team will be paying him seems an obscene amount of money to me.

“No-one is worth that sort of money, not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, who can virtually guarantee you a goal a game'.
