Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made an audacious deadline day bid to bring striker Javier Hernandez to White Hart Lane, reports the Daily Star.

The Manchester United striker has struggled to fit in to the starting XI in recent seasons despite maintaining a good goal-scoring record off the bench.

Hernandez managed 10 goals in the Premier League last season having only started nine games, making 13 substitute appearances.

His lack of playing time led Tottenham to believe that they could convince David Moyes to part with the Mexican international , with a £15m bid thought to be enough to secure his services.

Tottenham wanted the 25-year-old goal-poacher to supplement the £26m signing Roberto Soldado. There were also doubts over Jermain Defoe's future at White Hart Lane with the player being linked with Championship outfit QPR.

It has now been revealed by the Daily Star that Tottenham launched an official bid for Hernandez, only to be knocked back by Old Trafford chiefs.

Moyes was reportedly keen to keep his title winning squad intact going in to the new season and was only looking to make additions.

Hernandez has made just one substitute appearance for the Premier League champions so far this season.
