Mesut Ozil signing does not make Arsenal title contenders

Mesut Ozil has been hailed as a 'fantastic' signing for Arsenal by Didi Hamann, although the former Germany international is not convinced his compatriot can immediately transform the north London club into genuine title contenders.

Ozil joined the Gunners on deadline day in a club record £42.5 million transfer from Real Madrid, with his arrival heralded as perhaps the greatest coup of the summer transfer window.

Given the supreme talents of the German playmaker and the stars already available to Arsene Wenger, Arsenal have been identified by some as possible Premier League champions this season.

But, although Hamann believes Ozil will improve Arsenal greatly, the former Liverpool star is not sure the attacking midfielder can encourage a sustained title bid from his new teammates.

"With the pace of [Theo] Walcott, the trickery of [Santi] Cazorla, the physicality of [Olivier] Giroud, [Ozil] will create a lot of chances for Arsenal and I think he's a top, top signing," Hamann told Goal.

"Whether it's enough for them to challenge for the title, I'm not too sure, but it certainly is a step in the right direction."

Arsenal released images of Ozil sporting the club strip on Wednesday as they prepare for his arrival after he has completed international duties with his country.

The 24-year-old is scheduled to play his first game for Arsenal after the international break away to Sunderland in the Premier League on September 14.
