Former Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has given his full backing to current Saints hero Rickie Lambert, claiming he is the man to fire England to victories over Moldova and Ukraine.
England manager Roy Hodgson has been hit by the news this week that neither Wayne Rooney or in-form Daniel Sturridge will be able to play against the minnows after suffering head and thigh injuries respectively.
With Rooney unlikely to feature in either of the two games and Sturridge battling to be fit for next weeks game in Ukraine, Lambert has been called on by Hodgson, ahead of Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe to lead the line on Friday.
Lambert enjoyed a memorable start to his Three Lions career last month as he scored the winning goal against Scotland in a 3-2 friendly victory at Wembley. And Le Tissier feels that Lambert's time has come to shine on the international scene.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Le Tissier said: "He certainly does deserve it. He has come up the hard way and the long way to get where he is now.
"He had a cracking season last year and he has been brilliant for Southampton. It has got to be the best £1million Southampton ever spent."
And Le Tissier is convinced that Lambert is as good as any international striker playing at the moment.
"He has probably got everything you need to be a top international player, apart from that extra yard or two of pace that those top, top boys have.
"But his touch is superb, he is very good in the air, he brings people into play and he sees a pass as well as any midfielder in the Premier League."
