Top 10: Premier League assist makers since August 2007 (1)

When David Moyes opted to hand Manchester United's out-of-favour winger Luis Nani a new five-year contract earlier this week, the announcement was met with an element of surprise and confusion.

The Portuguese international had been heavily expected to leave Old Trafford over the summer, after a disappointing spell with the Premier League champions.

At his brilliant best, Nani could devastate the meanest of defences, but on too many occasions he flattered to deceive, failing to live up to his billing, after a €25.5million move from Sporting Lisbon.

Having followed the same path as a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, obvious comparisons were drawn between the two players, though Nani hasn't made anywhere near the impact that the Real Madrid superstar did during his time in England. Or has he?

In fact, statistics show that the 26-year-old might not deserve the criticism he has received over the past few years, given the fact that only FOUR players have made more assists in the Premier League since he signed for Manchester United in 2007.

Nani ranks in fifth place with an impressive total of 43 assists in five seasons at Old Trafford, and though he is yet to feature regularly for the Red Devils in 2013/14 - he made a substitute appearance in the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield - fans should expect to see more from their reinvigorated wide-man over the coming months.
