Lineker issues Hodgson backing

Former England international and host of BBC's Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, has taken to social networking site Twitter to issue comments on the national side's performance against Ukraine.

Roy Hodgson's men earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw to remain top of Group H, but know they will probably need to win their last two matches to guarantee progression to the World Cup finals next year.

And Gary Lineker has now come out to offer his opinion on the matter via his Twitter page, and said: "Decent result from a team missing a few key players.

"My only criticism, but it's a crucial one, was the inability to pass the ball accurately. Effort, defence, tactics, spirit, all sound.

"Roy Hodgson can't be blamed for some of England's finest having a bad night. With injured players returning his options will be greater."

During his playing days, Lineker notched 80 caps for the national side, scoring 48 goals and asserting himself as one of the best English strikers of all time.

His last appearance for England came in the Euro 2012 defeat against Sweden, when he was left visibly upset after being substituted by Graham Taylor when in sight of Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record of 49 goals.

Lineker clearly has a better opinion of Hodgson, and said: "Finally, I'd like to make it clear that I'm fully supportive of Roy and think he's doing a good job. Onwards.."
