England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed Jack Wilshere is not yet 100 per cent match fit.

The Arsenal midfielder started England's two World Cup qualifying games against Moldova on Friday and Tuesday's match against the Ukraine - but made way for Ashley Young in the 68th minute at Kiev's Olympic Stadium.

Despite the central midfielder taking part in all four of Arsenal's competitive games, Hodgson believes the 21-year-old is not yet fully fit.

Speaking after England's goalless draw with Ukraine, Hodgson told ITV Sport: "Jack is still looking for full fitness.

"That is why we took him off in the second-half.

"We certainly saw a much more effective Jack against Moldova, but he still did his work against Ukraine and, tactically, did all the things I asked of him."

News of Wilshere's lack of fitness will be a blow to Manchester United star Michael Carrick who had been hoping to hold down a regular place in Hodgson's first-team plans.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be disappointed with Hodgson - given the fact the Frenchman pleaded with Hodgson to rest him against Moldova.

Wenger will be hoping Wilshere is available for Arsenal's Premier League match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
