After many days of speculation, the Toronto Maple Leafs organisation has finally been able to re-sign forward Nazem Kadri.
Kadri has signed a two year $5.8m contract with the team.
With the contract situation behind him, Kadri is now ready to help the Leafs improve on last season.
He is young, has great speed, and exceptional puck handling skills - and has loads of potential. I’m betting he’ll be placed on the second forward line this upcoming season.
The only thing that bothers me about this deal is the price tag. In my opinion, $5.8m is way too much money for a player of Kadri’s calibre. I expected the contract amount to range from $3m to $4.5m, not $5.8m.
I’m pleased that Toronto was able to re-sign him, but I believe the team over spent on this contract. Especially when considering that Phil Kessel, Captain Dion Phaneuf, and Cody Franson still need to be given new contracts or extensions.
Obviously Phaneuf and Franson are Dave Nonis’s main concern now. According to reports, the Maple Leafs only have $2m or $3m to work with now that Kadri’s signed. In my opinion, it’s going to be very difficult for the organisation to persuade Franson to sign a new deal.
However, Franson is young, inexperienced and may be willing to sign a new deal for less money. Either way, the signing of Nazem Kadri was a bold move by Nonis.
I hope it doesn’t end up hurting the team in the long run like the long-term Grabovski deal did. I’m very excited to see if Nazem Kadri will be able to leave up to the team’s expectations and his price tag.
And I can’t wait for the season to begin.
