Tottenham star as good as Arsenal's Ozil

Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong insists the only real difference between Christian Eriksen and Mesut Ozil is reputation.

Arsenal broke the bank in order to sign the Real Madrid midfielder on transfer deadline day in a deal believed to be around £42.5m.

Alternatively, the Dane only cost Tottenham £11.5m from Ajax and both players impressed in equal measures in their debuts at the weekend.

Both players managed to gather assists in the opening halves of their games and their performances led to similar praise from team mates.

But now Bassong, who faced up to Eriksen at the weekend, insists that the 21-year-old is close to matching the ability of Ozil, saying it is just experience that is separating the two.

“He knows where to put himself, between the lines,” Bassong is quoted as saying in the Daily Express. “And as soon as he gets the ball he is a threat.

“He is a top-quality player and it’s hard to know whether or not to follow him as he can make the difference as soon as he gets the ball, in a split second. That is how top players are.

“Ozil must be one of the best No10s worldwide, a fantastic player, and Eriksen is not far from him.

“Ozil is more famous, he has played for Real Madrid and has loads of games under his belt. But Eriksen is a player I really like, the way he moves.

“Hopefully, for Spurs and for him, the Premier League will suit him well. I knew of him from watching him when he was at Ajax – he’s very simple with his touches.

“He also sees the right pass at the right moment and is moving well, which makes him hard to pick up. For his position he has good qualities to perform.”

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has also backed Eriksen to be a better deal for Spurs than Ozil is for Arsenal, insisting the Gunners paid a heavy price for the German international.

“This is a player who is young for the experience he has and has great potential." he told reporters.

"The Premier League will offer him the kind of challenge that he didn’t have in the Dutch league. If he continues with performances like this he is on the right track.”
