Howard Webb will take charge of Sunday's Premier League clash between Manchester City and Manchester United.

The FIFA-listed referee, widely regarded as England's top match official, has been appointed by the Premier League to oversee the first Manchester derby of the season.

Webb, 42, achieved the highest honour in refereeing back in 2010, when he was appointed to take charge of the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.

However, his controversial decision not to send off Nigel de Jong for kicking Spain's Xabi Alonso in the chest sparked widespread criticism.

Nevertheless, Webb remains one of the most accomplished and reliable referees in the sport, and has now been assigned the task of keeping Manuel Pellegrini and David Moyes' sides in check.

City currently sit fourth in the Premier League table after picking up seven points from their opening four matches, while United have exactly the same record but a slightly inferior goal difference.
