Chelsea must beat Basel in tonight's Champions League Group E opener, according to the club's former defender Frank Leboeuf.

The retired France international, who played for the Blues between 1996 and 2001, is confident that Jose Mourinho's men will beat the Swiss champions at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea are at home so they have to win, and they will win," Leboeuf told talkSPORT. "I’m confident they will have a long run in the Champions League.

“If they are among the favourites [to win the competition] Basel shouldn’t be a problem, so it’s up to them to [perform to] make sure the fans are confident they can win the Champions League in spring.”

Chelsea, the 2012 European champions, are expected to qualify from Group E in pole position. As well as Basel, the Blues also go head-to-head with Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 and Romanian champions Steaua București.

However, the west Londoners head into tonight's home fixture off the back of Saturday's surprise 1-0 Premier League defeat against Everton at Goodison Park.

That result leaves Chelsea, who have picked up seven points from their first four league matches, sixth in the table.
