Brooklyn Nets star Deron Williams has sustained an ankle injury, according to a team spokesman.

The 29-year-old point guard, who joined the Nets after being traded by the Jazz in February 2011 in exchange for duo Devin Harris and Derrick Favours in addition to money and two-first round draft picks, reportedly suffered the injury whilst working out in Utah.

The two-time Olympic gold medal winner has been fitted with a protective boot to safeguard the affected area, but the team claim that they are hopeful he will be fully fit by the start of training camp.

Williams, the former Illinois Fighting Illini favourite, struggled somewhat with ankle problems during the first half of the 2012/13 campaign but his form markedly improve after February's All-Star break and he ended the season with averages of 18.9 points and 7.7 assists.

The Nets, who finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last season before being ousted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, begin the new season with a road trip to face Mike Brown's Cleveland Cavaliers on October 30.

Their pre-season campaign starts on October 8 at Verizon Center against the Washington Wizards.
