Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lauded Wayne Rooney in the aftermath of the star's impressive double against Bayer Leverkusen.

Ferguson - who is now a director at Manchester United - was at Old Trafford on Tuesday to see Rooney score his 200th goal for the club.

Reports had previously suggested that Ferguson and Rooney had fallen out at the end of last season after the experienced manager decided to start his star striker on the bench against Real Madrid.

Ferguson also revealed that Rooney had asked to leave the club and omitted Rooney from Manchester United's 18-man squad for the Premier League champions' games against Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion.

However the Scotsman was full of praise for Rooney during an interview with MUTV: "I thought Wayne was fantastic. He's got his energy back, his determination, his purpose to attack"

"Being a director, I'm delighted to see that. He's back to what we always remember."

Rooney, 27, has started the current campaign off in brilliant form - with the England international claiming two assists and three goals in four games for Manchester United.
