Arsenal and Juventus battle for German midfielder

Arsenal and Juventus are reported to be the leading contenders to sign German youngster Julian Draxler when the transfer window opens once again in January.

The 20-year-old is one of most highly regarded emerging talents on the continent and, according to The Sun, both Arsenal and Juventus are interested in acquiring his services.

Italian champions Juventus, however, are placed slightly ahead of Arsenal in pursuit of the £34 million-rated midfielder, with Antonio Conte reported to have sent scouts to watch the player.

Juve representatives were in attendance to watch Draxler score for Schalke against Steaua Bucharest during the week, and could beat Arsenal into making the first move for the Germany international.

The interest of Arsenal dates back to early 2012, but the Gunners are reported to not even have made so much of an approach for Draxler, despite him being on their radar for four transfer windows.

Arsenal could, though, be encouraged to formalise their interest were Juventus to make an approach themselves, with Arsene Wenger proving in the summer that he is not afraid to spend big on quality targets.

The Gunners broke their transfer record on deadline day with the acquisition of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42 million, dwarfing the fee paid for their previous top signing, Andrey Arshavin.
