Manchester United boss David Moyes believes Nemanja Vidic should be rewarded with a new contract.

Vidic, who signed for United in January 2006 alongside fellow defender Patrice Evra, is coming to the end of his current deal which runs out at the end of the season.

Since his move to Old Trafford, the 31-year-old has built an outstanding partnership with fellow centre-back Rio Ferdinand – winning five Premier League titles, three League Cups and a Champions League medal in the process.

Moyes is keen for the Serbian to extend his seven-year stay at Old Trafford but admitted Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward is yet to open talks with Vidic’s representatives.

"It is something I have not discussed with the chief executive yet but Vidic's form at the moment would suggest he is well worthy of that," Moyes told talkSPORT.

"Probably his injuries have been the reason why you might have to look at it, so the big thing is to see how he goes.

"But his form has been very good. We just need to hope he gets through and doesn't pick up any more injuries.

"A lot of attention has been taken by the form of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie but defensively, we have done really well and Vida has been excellent.”

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week heaped praise on Vidic by singling the Red Devils skipper out for special praise.

And Moyes agrees with Ferguson’s assessment of Vidic.

"I have worked with some really good central defenders - but I have got to say, in the short time I have been here, Vida has been as good as there is,” added Moyes.

"He is everything you would want in a centre-half.

"He is tough. He is a great leader in the way he plays. He is aggressive at the right moments.

"I have been really impressed with how good a player he is."
