David Moyes vs Manuel Pellegrini: Who needs victory more?

Football News

The two Manchester clubs go head-to-head this afternoon and after a summer that saw both sides change the very top of their hierarchy, Manuel Pellegrini and David Moyes are now in charge of Manchester City and Manchester United respectively.

So, just four Premier League games into the new season, Pellegrini and Moyes will get their chance to battle one another in their very first Manchester derby.

But, which manager needs three points more?

Manuel Pellegrini

The Chilean tactician will be desperate for victory today - a very average start to the league season means City are yet to look the real deal under their new boss.

A defeat to Premier League new-boys Cardiff City certainly meant the honeymoon period at the Etihad was over for Pellegrini and he certainly needs victory today.

Perhaps, for Pellegrini, this isn't a must win but more of a must not lose game for him and his club.

A defeat, in their own back yard, against their local rivals would certainly be a damaging pill to swallow for the City fans and if his side are beaten today then confidence will take a major hit.

The likes of Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero must step up for Pellegrini. They have been there and done it before and must deliver this afternoon.

Looking at what the win would mean for Pellegrini, it would certainly give a real kick-start to the season. His side would gain vital belief and it would be a great challenge overcome if they can achieve maximum points against United.

The Red Devils are the champions, and Pellegrini will be hoping for a champion performance from his side today.

David Moyes

With a draw at home to Chelsea and defeat at Liverpool, David Moyes will be desperate to win a 'big game'. A defeat for the Scotsman's side today would build pressure on him and his players.

However, by no means would a defeat be a disaster for the champions. With fixtures against Swansea, Liverpool, Chelsea and City, it was never going to be an easy start for Moyes.

And, even if his side are beaten today, United would only be three points behind City and Chelsea, meaning the gap is not a great one.

So, for United as a team, it would not be a nightmare to be beaten, but Moyes needs victory.
He knows a win would be a real state of intention and would really give United fans belief that he's the right man to take the Red Devils forward.

Also, the longer he goes not winning a big game against one of the big-boys will only increase the pressure on his shoulders.

A win would be great for United, but even greater for Moyes.
