FC Basel centre-back Fabian Schar has become a target for Arsene Wenger as he looks to reinforce his defensive options, reports the Daily Express.

Arsenal are currently sitting atop of the Premier League after beating Stoke 3-1 at the weekend.

They lie level on points with north London rivals Tottenham, who also have 12.

However, concerns remain over the Gunners' defence after only managing to keep one clean sheet in their opening five Premier League games.

Injuries to club captain Thomas Vermaelen, coupled with the loss of several squad players including Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci, gives the Arsenal boss little wiggle room should Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny sustain an injury.

Bacary Sagna has already been required to fill in a centre-back several times this season and, despite displaying some solid performances, Wenger doesn't deem it as a long term option.

As Arsenal become genuine title contenders, Wenger is now looking to bolster his squad to sustain the challenge.

He now sees Basel defender Schar, who has impressed for his club and country over the last 12 months, as a perfect addition to the squad.

The 21-year-old, who starred in the beating of Chelsea in the Champions League last week, has received three caps for Switzerland and is likely to keep his place in the side for the remainder of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Like Vermaelen, Schar has an eye for goal having already scored five times in his opening ten games this season.

Serie A giants Juventus are also reported to be interested in the defender as the Swiss side ready themselves for a flurry bids when the the transfer window reopens in January.
