Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes Arsene Wenger's current squad has finally come of age, and is capable of winning the Premier League title following the capture of Mesut Ozil, reports

The Gunners completed the club-record £42.4million signing of the German playmaker from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, a move that has been hailed as one of the greatest pieces of business all summer.

Ozil has made an immediate impact in north London, as Wenger's side moved to the top of the table with 12 points from their opening five games, after Sunday's 3-1 victory over Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium.

The 24-year-old turned in another man of the match performance as he claimed all three Arsenal assists, and gave Pires even more reason to be optimistic that his former club will finally end their eight-year trophy drought in 2013/14.

"It's possible [for Arsenal to win] because now the young players have grown up and have more experience," he told Goal in Lagos on Sunday.

"They also have a good mix for [Arsene] Wenger. If you put Ozil in the middle, I think it’s a very good mix for Arsenal.

"[Ozil's] a very good player, he plays for the German national team, he played for Real Madrid, now he's playing for Arsenal. He has the experience. I think the football will be more simple now."

Having also won their opening Champions League group game against Marseille in France last week, Arsenal are keen to mount a serious trophy challenge in Europe, though that is something that will likely prove more difficult, given that they are also paired with Borussia Dortmund and Napoli in Group F.

"Seriously, I think Arsenal have a good potential to win the Premiership [this year]," Pires added.

"For the Champions League I don't know but the most important thing is to focus on the Premiership because it is very important for the club and for the fans."
