Juan Mata should trust Mourinho, says Chelsea coach

Chelsea assistant first-team coach Steve Holland has told Juan Mata to trust manager Jose Mourinho.

Mata has been restricted to just three appearances so far this season and has been told that he is no longer Chelsea's first choice number 10.

However Holland believes Mourinho will have a positive effect on Spanish midfielder Mata in the long run.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Holland said on Mata: "He (Mourinho) is always pushing, pushing the players to the maximum every day," said Holland.

"That's evident not just in his teams, but in the individuals he's worked with.

"If you look Jose's three-year period working with Ronaldo, he's really evolved as an individual. He's not just a talented dribbler and runner with the ball who can score goals.

"He has become a top-level match-winner who wants to run in behind, make runs, threaten the goal.

"I don't think that just happens. That comes with pushing, even if it's the best.

"On a day-to-day basis he (Mourinho) will be pushing for signs of improvement, working to progress the individual but ultimately for the benefit of the team."

Holland has warned Mata that he may have to adapt his game to play on the right side of Chelsea's midfield - rather than behind the striker, a position he had grown accustomed to playing in.

Holland added: "Having to adapt - and Jose has used that phrase - is nothing particularly new here.

"It's another adaptation that is required. Juan has shown in his time here that he's more than capable of doing that. And I'm sure that will be the case this time."

Mata had been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge over the summer, however Mourinho ruled out the possibility of last season's player of the year leaving the club.

The 25-year-old will be given the chance to show Mourinho why he is worthy of a first-team spot when Chelsea take on Swindon Town at the County Ground on Tuesday.
