Barcelona's versatile defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano was left in agony and had to be taken off after he was taken out by his teammate Sergio Busquets.
Mascherano is expected to be sidelined for ten to 15 days with a hamstring strain - and he will miss the league matches against Almeria and Valladolid as well as the Champions League clash against Celtic.
The 29-year-old has become an important figure for the Catalans with injuries to Carlos Puyol and Jordi Alba.
Mascherano was substituted for academy graduate Marc Bartra, during Barcelona's 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, who will look to fill the void left by the Argentina international.
Bartra was part of Spain's Under-21 international side that won the European Championships in the summer - but has only made 12 league appearances for the Blaugrana.
Barcelona currently top the La Liga table after winning all six of their matches.
