Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has made it clear that his side will aim to win the Capital One Cup after beating Liverpool on Wednesday night in the third round.

A Javier Hernandez goal very early in the second half was enough for the Red Devils to claim victory at Old Trafford as David Moyes' side attempted to erase the memory of their 1-4 league loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Evans was making his first start of the season and insisted United would be mounting a serious challenge to claim the League Cup this season.

"We want to win it. It was the first trophy I won and it was a great feeling to win it then," he said.

"It's a competition we want to win, we will be taking it seriously. I think the fans enjoyed it, we certainly enjoyed it.

"It was a hard game, Liverpool have been playing expansive football. I am just glad we got the goal after half-time and held on.

"They put out a strong team. There were a lot of lads out there who haven't had a lot of football and were getting a bit tired towards the end."

Many saw Wednesday's game as a must-win for United despite it being in the often-maligned Capital One Cup.

The loss to City as well as it being against Liverpool - who beat United earlier this season in the league - meant the match was attributed great importance.

And Evans' fellow defender Chris Smalling highlighted the need for the strong performance to give the club a lift.

"It was a massive turnaround," Smalling said.

"It was a big stage for us to go out there. There was a lot of doubt at the weekend, we needed to go out and put on a performance.

"I felt like it was end to end for pretty much 90 minutes. It shows we can go out there on the big occasion and produce."

Manchester United have been drawn against Norwich for the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.
