Mourinho wanted Özil at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho wanted to take Mesut Özil with him this summer from Real Madrid to Chelsea, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish news site Intereconomia claims that Özil was one of Mourinho's high-level transfer targets this summer, but the Stamford Bridge boss was beaten to the punch by Arsenal.

Having found out that Özil was available for transfer in the final few days of the summer window, Chelsea reportedly registered their interest too late.

Arsenal had already had a bid accepted by Real Madrid, and Arsene Wenger's side were beginning talks with the Germany international.

The same Spanish report also suggests Özil was not the only Madrid player Mourinho was keen on - the Chelsea boss also considered moves for Fabio Coentrao and Sami Khedira.

Chelsea didn't make concrete offers for any of the three players, but speculation is mounting that Mourinho could return with a formal offer for Coentrao and Khedira in the January transfer window.

Özil was the big-money deadline day capture for the Gunners, who smashed their own transfer record to bring the former-Werder Bremen playmaker to north London.

And he's quickly settled into life with his new Arsenal teammates. The Gunners number 11 played a key role in all three of Arsenal's goals against Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
